Some facts.
The Japanese Bobtail is an ancient oriental breed that is distinguished by a short tail that resembles a rabbit pom-pom. Several centuries ago, cats saved Japan from the invasion of rodents, which earned them special recognition among the Japanese.
History of occurrence
The Japanese Bobtail originally lived in China, where it had a slightly different appearance and a long tail. Then cats appeared in Japan, where a gene mutation occurred with them, which led to the formation of a short tail.
At first, cats were used as entertainment for the local aristocracy. Kittens were taken out into the yards on leashes to demonstrate their beauty to guests. The Japanese Bobtail cat breed became a real muse for the creative Japanese, the elite of that period. They can be found on images from the 16th century.
In 1602, all cats living with local residents were released by royal decree. The owners had to release the pets for hunting on the city streets. This was done to save the larvae of silkworms, which were exterminated by rodents. The rats multiplied and starved so much that they began to destroy the locals’ food, mulberry trees and even rice paper books. The description of that period even got into historical books.
Animals really helped people and they were very grateful to them, which is partly why the Japanese Bobtail has become such a popular breed in Eastern culture. Cats lived in almost every home. Basically, these were tricolor cats of the “mi-ke” color. After the story with rodents, cats were elevated to the rank of sacred animals.
Interesting!
It is believed that it was this breed that became the founder of the Hello Kitty brand. The brand was created by a designer from Japan in 1974. The famous waving-foot Maneki-neko was also inspired by the breed. Japanese Bobtails like to hold one paw in the air, lift it up. This symbol brings good luck.
Animals came to American and European lands thanks to a breeder named Elizabeth Freret. The woman was breeding the Abyssinian breed and in 1967 decided to purchase three Japanese Bobtails. A couple more individuals Elizabeth took out bypassing the law. Thus began the history of the origin of the American line of the breed.
The CFA recognized the breed in 1968. This was an important step, as In Japan, cats were bred without papers. In 1991, long-haired individuals, which for a long time were considered a marriage, also received recognition.
The breed is distributed in Japan, the USA. In Russia, England, it is rare.
Height and weight
These are fairly light animals of medium size. Weight 4 kg. In rare cases, the male can reach 4.5-5 kg. Cats are always slightly larger and heavier than cats. Height no more than 30 cm.
Voice
Japanese Bobtails are very talkative creatures. They make unusual sounds that can be compared to singing. The sounds are very lingering, melodic and loud. These cats can hit high notes.
Lifespan
On average, cats live up to 15 years. However, reviews note that many individuals live for 18-19 years. The age of the animal depends not only on nutrition, care, but also on the genetic predisposition.
