Himalayan cats, also known as Himmies, are a hybrid breed of Persian and Siamese cats, which were created in the United States. As a result, these cats have a long, silky coat with a Persian-like pattern, and Siamese-like pointed coloring, on their ears, tails, faces, and paws. They also have bright blue eyes, an indication that they are Siamese.

himalayan cats also known as hemis are a hybrid breed of persian and siamese cats which were created in the united states as a result these cats have a long silky coat with a persian-like pattern and siamese-like pointed coloring on their ears tails faces and paws they also have bright blue eyes an indication that they are siamese while relatively large the himalayans are thought of as gentle giants of the feline world they adore their owners have sweet tame personalities and are very playful however if you’re looking for a low maintenance cat a himalayan may not be the best choice for you their silky long coats require daily attention history of the himalayan cat himalayans don’t have a very long history they have been around for less than 100 years but attempts to breed a long-haired siamese lasted decades breeders all over the world tried to produce a persian cat that was marked with siamese markings during the 1920s and 1930s two harvard researchers crossed a black persian male and a siamese female in 1935 to find out how certain traits are inherited newton’s debutant came into existence after this team of researchers produced several litters of long-haired siamese by cross-breeding and creating several litters a breeder named margarita goforth continued to work towards the goal of the ciamo persian cross following the end of world war ii as a result of her efforts to get the himalayan recognized as a new breed the cat fanciers association cfa and the american cat fanciers association akfa honored this hybrid in 1957. many years later however the cat fanciers association abandoned the category of himalayan as a separate breed instead it recognized it as a subspecies of the persian himalayans and persians are still not considered separate breeds by many organizations today common health problems as with persians the himalayan cat is more susceptible to a variety of health problems than many other breeds it is important to ask for proof of health from the breeder if you intend to purchase a purebred himalayan kitten in spite of this you can get an idea of any potential inheritable conditions that the parents of the kitten may have passed along to their offspring himalayans suffer from the following health conditions polycystic kidney disease pkd causes cats kidneys to develop multiple cysts it’s not immediately life-threatening but treatment should begin as soon as possible to prevent new cysts from developing and to reduce the risk of dangerous bacterial infections respiratory issues himalayans have flattened faces which makes them more susceptible to respiratory problems like difficulty breathing and swallowing or incapacity to exercise feline asthma this respiratory illness can cause your cat to have difficulty breathing and it can be very serious if you notice your cat is coughing frequently struggling to breathe or showing other signs of respiratory distress you should consult your veterinarian right away progressive retinal atrophy blindness can result from this inherited eye disorder talk to your veterinarian about the best ways to reduce the risk of these health conditions for your himalayan cat they can provide advice on active steps you can take to protect it as well as an action plan if a health problem arises the personality of himalayan cat similar to the persian the himalayan is sweet docile and quiet it would be fitting for this cat to live in any home where she can sit in a lap and be petted by people who can appreciate her gentle demeanor she would enjoy spending time with kind children who will make the time to play with her and allow her to chase interactive toys himalayans are lovable but juicy himalayans devote their attention to family members and a few trusted guests loud environments aren’t their style with large expressive eyes and a soft pleasant voice hemis let their simple needs be known with their simple needs it is unlikely that your cat will jump on your kitchen counters climb up your curtains or perch on top of your refrigerator if you give it regular meals a little playtime with catnip mice and lots of love they return your affection tenfold whether she is sitting on the floor or on a more accessible piece of furniture it is fine for her to rule her domain from there if you are at work or busy at home the himalayan is content to adorn a chair sofa or bet until you are free to admire her and give her the attention she deserves but does not demand appearance it is a medium to large sized cat with a large deep chest rounded abdomen and sturdy muscular bones a healthy himalayan should feel muscular and solid but shouldn’t be too fat they have a snubbed nose flattened face small ears wide set blue eyes and a short but fluffy tail their ears are small there is no denying that the himalayan is a truly stunning breed the fur is long and flowing with a tendency to mat if not regularly groomed himalayans generally have a white to the cream body with darker points on their face ears tails and legs these colors may include lilac chocolate seal red and blue as part of the breed standards tabby tortoise shell patterning is acceptable on the cat’s points but not on the body its eyes and nose should be a vivid blue and its paw pads and paw pads should match its point color the himalayan is not a hypoallergenic cat and it sheds quite a bit without regular grooming how to care of a himalayan cat to care for himalayans daily grooming is necessary that long beautiful coat doesn’t keep itself clean and tangle free on its own daily combs and regular bathing at least once a month are essential you should also consider litter box issues litter may become lodged in a himalayan’s paws or coat when litter boxes aren’t kept clean hemis tend to stop using them in this breed excessive tearing can cause under eye stains so make sure to wipe the corners of the eyes every day and brush the teeth daily to prevent periodontal disease the best practice is to brush your teeth every day but you can do so at least once a week keeping a himalayan indoors is a good idea as he’s not a scrapper and has little chance of beating out other cats dogs coyotes and other dangers that go along with being outdoor cats a himalayan that goes outdoors also runs the risk of being taken by someone who would like to keep such a beautiful cat without paying for it if you found this I have a beautiful sassy girl. I’ve had her a year, she was posted by someone’s cousin and I agreed to take her. It has taken her this whole time to be happy here, she’s the house boss and terrifies my yorkie! She’s probably 5-7 years old and her previous person died, poor girl has had a lot to deal with. She is starting to sleep with me/on me and chirp at me. So glad I have her.
